Family Vacation Photoshoot Guide

Vacation pictures are something you’ll look back on for many years to come. Hiring a photographer to take your family vacation portraits is well worth it if you make the most of your session! Here are my 5 tips to help you get the best family photos on your trip:

1. Choose a Location You Enjoy

Picking a location for your family vacation photoshoot is often the first step, and you shouldn’t overthink it. Consider what you came on vacation to do and let that be your guide. If enjoying long days at the beach or getting out and about in nature is what calls to you, then guess what, you just chose your photoshoot location!

2. Account for Lighting

Time tends to get away from us while we’re on vacation, so plan ahead! Schedule your family vacation photoshoot with optimal lighting conditions in mind. For beach photography, the early morning or late afternoon sun will make for better lighting in your photos, however, you can work with your photographer to figure out the best time for your session based on your plans.

3. Let Your Kids Have Fun

For adults, vacation is about relaxation, but for the kids, it’s all about fun! Allowing that energy to shine through in your family vacation portraits is a decision you won’t regret. Let the kids run around during your session and bring props if you want to. This will get the children laughing and playing, making your photos all the more real.

4. Be In the Moment

Remember, the most important thing about your photoshoot is to capture your real, beautiful moments on camera. That’s what ultimately makes a picture-perfect photo. Don’t stress too much about what everyone’s wearing, what the kids are doing, or whether everyone looks their best. Just embrace the moment, relax, and have fun with your family! After all, that’s what you came on vacation to do.
