How to Get the Most Out of Your Maternity Photos

Pregnancy is such a beautiful time and one that should be celebrated. It is so meaningful to have maternity photos to celebrate the season before baby comes and to have to remember as your family grows.

As a mom of three, I love to connect with women who are expecting. Through my own pregnancies and my years of experience with maternity photography, I have many poses and techniques to make mamas feel gorgeous during our session. I love capturing the glow in photos, whether we are focusing on solo shots or including the family in the shoot as well.

Get Inspired

Instagram, my website, and Pinterest are all great places to start for inspiration. Decide on the style of the shoot that you want. Are you hoping for photos that show off your playful side, or that have a more romantic vibe?

By doing research you will have a better idea what outfits you want to wear, the locations you are hoping to use, and know of any poses that you would really like to see. Of course, your photographer is an expert and will be able to guide you but coming in prepared will help you to get the most out of your shoot.

Choose Your Style

Plan Ahead

Maternity photos are best taken around 30 weeks' gestation, however, moms expecting twins or who are having a complicated pregnancy should plan them a little earlier. Schedule your session early in your pregnancy to reserve a date that will suit your timeline and your photographer’s schedule.

Location

The location possibilities are endless for a maternity shoot. Do you want to be outdoors or in your home? Let your photographer know if you prefer to minimize time on your feet or if you are okay to walk around.

Outfit

Of course, we want to show off that belly! Pick an outfit that flatters your body and hugs the belly (without being too constricting or making you uncomfortable). I have a client closet that you can choose from, with tons of pieces that will flatter your figure.

Props

Families often love to bring in sentimental pieces and elements that they want to share with baby when they arrive. Bows, small shoes, onesies, or stuffed animals are popular choices.

Family

Some mamas prefer to keep the maternity shoot as a solo experience with them and their baby. Other families want to bring in the other parent and even siblings to share the shoot. This is totally up to you. In my maternity shoots, I always take some solo shots of mom before we get started with the rest of the family.

Some couples love to share their excitement for their baby by posing together. If that is the case, consider a longer session instead of a mini. This will give you the time to have a variety of poses, outfits, and even locations.

Treat Yourself

Since so many poses will focus on your belly and your hands, consider treating yourself to a manicure or at home mani beforehand. Make sure you are ready for your hands to be front and center as we use them to showcase your belly!

As your body changes and some of your favorite clothes no longer fit the same way, take a little extra time to style your hair or do your makeup in a way that makes you feel confident.

Consider a Newborn Package

Most photographers (myself included) offer maternity and newborn bundles. This means that you can get both of those moments done by the same photographer, someone you already know and feel comfortable being around.
