Tips for Your Fall Photoshoot

Fall is the perfect time to schedule your next photography session for so many reasons. The cooler weather means that you won’t be sweating before we even take the first photo (in Florida, this is certainly the case). Additionally, we get to play with changing colors in nature, a different color palette in your outfits, and some cozier poses.

If you are looking to get the most out of your fall photoshoot, read the tips below!

What to Wear

Plan outfits ahead of time so that you don’t need to scramble the hour before the photo session. This means that you can make sure your clothes are clean, ironed, and laid out the night before. If you have kids, make sure to bring a back-up outfit (you never know when someone will spill juice on a t-shirt).

Aim to coordinate but avoid matching too closely. Your entire family does not need to show up in the exact same outfit, but you can choose cozy sweaters and fall dresses that complement each other. Jewel tones and deep reds work well with the yellows and burnt oranges of fall.

Additionally, many photographers (like me) have client closets that you can use. Before our session, I will send you a catalog of options and you can let me know if you want to use any of the pieces I have.

Plan Your Location

I have a long list of beautiful fall locations that can cater to what you want to accomplish from your session, from local fields to the best spots on the beach. If you are hoping to embrace the fall leaves and colors, there are many options for that as well.

Look at images from my portfolio and other online inspiration to find images that you love. My favorite spot in the fall is the sunflower field in Northwest Florida.

Some other location ideas:

  • Pumpkin Patch

  • Hayride or corn maze

  • Local park

  • Lake or pond

  • Forest

  • Field

  • Covered bridge

  • Farm or barn

  • Apple Orchard

Take Advantage of Natural Props

From leaves to pumpkins, you have the option to lean as far into the fall theme as you desire. Have your kids gather leaves and throw them in the air, make a pile and jump in, or have your photographer take lifestyle photos of your crew picking out the perfect pumpkin.

Favorite Fall Poses

While the beautiful fall scenery will help with so many of the poses, one of the best things about the autumn pictures is that you get the chance to cozy up. Play around with sitting and standing poses, keeping your partner or your kids close!
