What to Wear to a Summer Photoshoot

It’s time to start planning those summer photoshoots and with that comes the dilemma over what to wear! Here are my top 3 tips to help families decide how to dress for their photo sessions this summer:

Consider the Location

Is your summer photoshoot taking place at the beach or in the park? The location of your shoot can help you determine what style of dress is appropriate.

If your photos are taking place on the sand or by the ocean, casual dresses or even beach cover ups are good options for the girls. For the boys, neutral colored polos or t-shirts paired with khaki shorts compliment the setting perfectly.

If your photos are taking place around greenery, think about which colors will compliment the scenery. You can stick to a more neutral color palette, dressing everyone in tans, light blues, or navy. You can also choose to play off vibrant colors instead, dressing your crew in various yellows, oranges, or pinks.

What’s the Vibe?

It’s important to consider how you want your summer photos to come across. Are you going for a fun, casual look, or more of a clean-cut, formal feel? What you wear can help you accomplish the vibe you are trying to emulate in your photos.

For a fun summer photoshoot, you can dress down. Sundresses, short-sleeve shirts, casual skirts, or shorts are all appropriate for this style of session. You might even want to experiment with some accessories, such as hats or headbands.

For a formal summer photoshoot, you can dress your outfits up. Casual clothing is still fine, but you may want to wear a longer dress or jeans instead. You can also add some jewelry or wear nice shoes to make your outfits a little fancier.

Take Natural Elements Into Account

If your summer photoshoot is taking place outside, heat is always a factor that needs to be considered. If your session ends up on a hot day, you need to be prepared.

Choose an outfit that won’t leave you feeling hot and sticky from sweat. Lightweight or free-flowing clothing is often the safest choice for a summer photoshoot. For children, this tip is especially important!

If you do choose billowy clothing, don’t forget that wind could also impact your summer photoshoot. It might be a good idea to wear something for coverage underneath. And if a hat is an integral part of your wardrobe, be sure to fasten it securely or pin it down.
