Photogenic Makeup Guide

So, your photoshoot is booked, you are excited about the location, and your outfit is all picked out. But have you thought about your makeup? I have a few simple tips and tricks to help you look camera ready for your shoot!

Fresh Faced

Remember to embrace your natural beauty. The camera might pick up on things that the naked eye would not. It is a good idea to keep your foundation simple and clear, especially if your photoshoot is taking place outside and during the day. Here are some suggestions that can help make your skin look flawless:

  • Match your foundation to your skin tone as closely as possible

  • Try not to go overboard with concealer (You do not want your skin to look oily!)

  • Consider using a light eyeshadow or highlighter to bring out your best features (I.e., nose, cheekbones, eyes.)

  • Avoid facial powders that say HD or mineral (The ingredients in these formulas usually do not play well with flash because they can reflect the light.)

Lightened Eyes

They say the eyes are the window to the soul. That is true in photos too! Here are some tips that can help make your eyes pop during a photoshoot:

  • Use redness reliever eye drops

  • Try applying a neutral shadow on your eyelids

  • Darken your eyebrows (Use your natural brow as a guide. You do not want to go overboard with this! Just add a bit of shading or length accordingly.)

  • Dab a lighter shadow or highlighter at the inner corners of your eyes

Makeup Colors

Typically, you will want to stick to neutral colors for your photoshoot, unless your session is in a dark setting. You can make your location work to your advantage by using the backdrop as a guide. Here are some of my tips when it comes to picking colors:

  • Use an eyeshadow that is close to your skin tone

  • Consider a matte lipstick or gloss (A little shimmer never hurts, but try not to use too much!)

  • Try using brown eyeliner instead of black (This is definitely worth trying if your photoshoot is outside.)

  • Stick to muted shades of blush

All in all, do not let your makeup overrun your photoshoot. Let your location and natural beauty lead the way. If you are makeup-ready but you still need to book a session, contact me!
